Moving to a new town or city can be quite a daunting (and exhausting!) task. Not only is there the strain that comes with moving, there’s also the stress of getting used to a new place altogether. It can take between six months to a year to fully adapt to a new environment. Here are some tips to make the transition easier.
1) Unpack and create your new space
Order some takeout, relax, and start to unpack. Putting together a cozy home that is familiar on some level will help you settle into your new environment with ease. Adjusting to a place when one is constantly assimilating new things is draining, but having a comfortable, safe place to return can provide much needed relief.
2) Go for a drive and get lost (and bring a charged phone)
Once you have settled in, go for a drive to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings. See where the local grocery store, gym, gas station, and main street is. Shopping at small businesses and spending time at your neighborhood coffee shop/ community space can be a great way to meet locals too!
3) Reach out to that long lost friend who happens to live in your new town, city or neighborhood
It’s amazing how much easier transitioning can be when you already know someone who has adapted to the environment. They can show you around, pointing out places you have yet to discover and introduce you to other potential new friends. It’s really a glimpse into the comfortable world another person has created for themself in your new environment.
4) Try something new
You’ve come all this way, maybe it’s time to try something new! Once you familiarize yourself with the area, look into that dance class you’ve always wanted to take or join a local book club or community organization. Using online local tools such as Meetup or Nextdoor can be extremely helpful in finding new activities.
