If you’ve recently bought your first home, first of all, congratulations! Buying a new home is a huge step for anyone and especially first-time homebuyers who have just committed to taking that first huge step of homeownership. It probably feels great to be able not to have to worry about shopping the market anymore, or dealing with house showers, viewings, realtors, or the offer process. You’re finally done! Now what? After closing on your new home, there are a few things to take care of in your new home before you start moving things in.
Before we get into that, however, you’ll of course want to tackle the packing and moving process with the best professional moving company in the Chicago area. No matter where your new home might be located, Chicago Movers have the best prices and service for your relocation. Move into your new home with ease when you use the best professional movers around. See what we can do for you and your household items today.
So what should you take care of in your new home before moving everything in? Let’s determine how to prepare your home for move-in.
Since you now own your own home, your move-in timeline is thankfully a lot more lax and on your terms than when you’re bound into a lease or rental agreement. Because of this, you can move in at your own pace, and make any improvements to your home that you want to before all of your furniture and items are set up. It’s for this reason that you should always do a walkthrough of your new home before moving anything in.
During your walkthrough, look for any repairs or updates that need to be done, or other work you or the previous owner would like to have handled before you move in. This can be something as little as painting various rooms or replacing an entire kitchen.
You’ll also want to make sure that the previous owners have provided any appliances or household items that were agreed upon at the closing of the sale. Also make sure that everything works, from outlets to switches, and light fixtures.
Do this walkthrough as early as possible to make sure your moving process isn’t delayed due to unforeseen repairs or updates.
This might not seem like a particularly high-priority thing to take care of right away, but one of the most important things to do when moving into a new home is to change all of the locks and secure your new home. You never know who could have a key to your home because of an old owner – or if the old owner has spares! Keep yourself safe and secure by switching out locks and updating any security system passwords.
One of the worst citations to walk into upon moving into a new home is to come into none of your utilities being on or working. Set up the utilities for your home or switch them into your name as soon as possible so that everything can be good to go upon your arrival.
While you’re setting up utilities, change all of the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors to new ones, and check emergency shut-offs and circuit breaks to get familiar with them and how they’re labeled.
Now that you’re ready to move into your new home, make sure you have the right movers on your side for the job! Chicago Movers will make your relocation a breeze and will give you the best pricing and experience possible. See what we can do for you today!

My move went very well. All of the people working for you were great. That includes the office staff, the movers in Downers Grove and the movers in Goodyear. The drivers and movers on both ends worked diligently, carefully and did not waste any time. They were courteous and neat.

Moving 3 times in 2 ½ years is not something Lynn would recommend to anyone. For us, it would have been impossible without the assistance of Chris and his crews at Hollander Moving and Storage. We’ve done home-to-home, home-to-condo and condo-to-condo moves. In each situation, we found Hollander’s staff to…
