As the Chicago winter gets closer and closer to being upon us, some people who are fortunate enough to have homes in multiple places, or who maybe are looking to have another home in another climate might be looking to California to spend the winter in warmer temperatures.
For others who might be a little sick of the winter we all know is coming to the city, they might be looking to head to sunny California before the snow comes! For those looking to move or buy a second house in LA from Chicago, it can be hard to know where to start when looking for a place in a whole different area. Plus, Los Angeles is a lot different from Chicago, so what should you expect from the area and the housing market?
Luckily for you, we’ve done the research to determine what the best neighborhoods in LA are for those moving from Chicago.
If you’re tired of wicked Chicago winters, it could be time to make the move to the West Coast – no matter how much you love the city! At Chicago Movers, we certainly love where we’re from, but understand the wintertime can be tough in the city for a lot of people – especially those who maybe aren’t from here originally, or who are just not fans of the cold in general.
So where are the best places in LA to move? Check out our top recommendations below.
West Hollywood
West Hollywood, or WeHo, as it’s known by many, is a prime spot in Los Angeles. Located directly in the heart of Los Angeles, this neighborhood is a hub for entertainment, culture, and nightlife. It’s also a particularly LGBTQIA+ friendly community, and is a prime area for those looking for an area with like-minded people.
Though WeHo spans less than 2 miles, it has a ton to offer. It’s dense, very walkable ,and is packed with all of the restaurants, clubs, bars and shops you could ever hope for. It’s a great place for Chicagoans to still be able to walk around and explore, without having to rely on a car.
Looking to explore WeHo? Prime tourist attractions include the Sunset Strip, the Chateau Marmont, and Santa Monica Boulevard.
Koreatown
This neighborhood is located west of Downtown Los Angeles and south of Hollywood. Like Chicago, this area offers a lot of late night restaurants, bars, clubs, and entertainment.
This area, however, has a lot more to offer than just great nightlife and amazing food – it’s a hub for culture, diversity, and nostalgia.
Downtown LA
Downtown LA is in the midst of a renaissance of sorts, and there’s never been a better time to move to this section of LA! This area has a similar sort of regular city vibe with sub-neighborhoods that Chicago does, and has a ton of restaurants, bars, and various things to do for entertainment or cultural enrichment.
Silver Lake
Located on the eastside of Los Angeles, Silver Lake, or the “Brooklyn of Los Angeles”, brings a more alternative or hipster feel to the area. Filled with coffee shops, vegan cafes and restaurants, as well as its storied Silver Lake Reservoir, this area is perfect for someone who wants the Los Angeles city lifestyle, but with more of a casual twist.
Venice Beach
If you’re looking for more of a laid back, bohemian approach to Los Angeles living, there’s no better place for you than Venice Beach. This area is very historic, and boasts many beautiful waterways, pedestrian walkways, the iconic Venice boardwalk, and a ton of picturesque areas that you’ll love to explore.
Los Feliz
This eclectic Los Angeles neighborhood is tucked into the hills above the city. This area features the iconic Griffith Park and its observatory of the same name, as well as a plethora of hiking trails and outdoor activities to partake in.

My move went very well. All of the people working for you were great. That includes the office staff, the movers in Downers Grove and the movers in Goodyear. The drivers and movers on both ends worked diligently, carefully and did not waste any time. They were courteous and neat.

Moving 3 times in 2 ½ years is not something Lynn would recommend to anyone. For us, it would have been impossible without the assistance of Chris and his crews at Hollander Moving and Storage. We’ve done home-to-home, home-to-condo and condo-to-condo moves. In each situation, we found Hollander’s staff to…
